RIO OLYMPICS – 18-year-old Olympian Tawin Hanprab has won a silver medal for Thailand in the men’s Taekwondo competition, bringing Thailand its first Olympic medal for men’s Taekwondo.
Tawin Hanprab has won his silver medal in the men’s 58 kilogram Taekwondo weight division. Tawin defeated South Korea’s Kim Tae-hun with a score of 12-10, and went on to defeat Australia’s Safran Khalil in the quarterfinals by 11-9, before emerging victorious against Dominican Republic’s Luisito Pie in the semifinals by a score of 11-7.
In the final round, the18-year-old Olympian was bested by China’s Shuai Zhao with a score of 6-4. China’s athlete won the gold medal in this weight division.
Tawin Hanprab became Thailand’s first male Taekwondo athlete to win a medal from the Olympic Games, as previously Thailand has only won Taekwondo medals from women’s competitions since the 2004 Olympics.
On the women’s 49 kilogram Taekwondo weight division, a 19-year-old athlete Panipak Wongpattanakit also won the bronze medal from the semifinals match against Mexico’s Itzel Adilene Manjarrez Bastidas with a score of 15-3, awarding herself with a fourth consecutive Taekwondo medal since the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
