CHIANG RAI – Governor Boonsong Techamaneesathit led a team of military officials to inspect the areas damaged by recent hail and summer storms in Governor Boonsong Techamaneesathit visits homes damaged by summer storms in Mae Pao a (subdistrict) of Phaya Mengrai District, in Chiang Rai.
The storms destroyed homes, killing a small child and wounding three others in the Mae Pao district. They also felled several trees and electric poles, caused power outages in a number of villages. Local residents claimed the storms were the most devastating in 30 years.
Initial reports also indicated that more than 300 homes were damaged in four subdistricts of Phaya Mengrai district.
Meanwhile the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) director general Chatchai Phromlert revealed that tens of thousands of households in many provinces nationwide have been damaged by summer thunderstorms between April 1 and May 15, 2016.
A total of 41,831 households in 56 provinces in the North, Northeast, East, South and Central regions have been damaged so far by summer thunderstorms and hail storms. Of the 56 provinces ravaged by the thunderstorms, 20 are in the Northeast.
Local department officials have prepared equipment to help the affected villagers and monitored the situation around the clock. Fast-moving units have been on standby so that the officials will be able to provide immediate assistance to the victims.
