CHIANG RAI – Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Wut Liptapallop has convened a meeting with Chiang Rai provincial police to brief them on tourist safety measures to prevent and suppress crimes against tourists, as well as those committed by foreigners.
Under the new policy, high-ranking officials will be held responsible for any crime against tourists that takes place in their jurisdiction.
An investigation committee will be appointed to probe local police chiefs in the event of a serious offense that occurs in their neighborhood.
The Royal Thai Police has given Chiang Rai special attention due to the province’s fast-growing tourism.
In 2015, over two million foreigners visited Chiang Rai Province of which nearly 50,000 were Chinese nationals.
The Deputy National Police Chief has instructed local police to keep a close watch on the activities of tourists, following reports earlier this year of crimes committed by foreigners.
Chinese nationals have been involved in six criminal cases and nine traffic accidents, which resulted in one fatality.
