CHIANG MAI – A tourist van traveling on the Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai Highway with 12 Chinese tourists on board was struck by a pickup truck after it veered off the road, spun around and hit the van, causing it to flip on its side.
Ten Chinese of the 12 tourists were injured, one of them seriously, after their van collided with a pickup truck and overturned in Doi Saket district of the Highway.
One Chinese passenger was badly hurt and trapped in the van, the other passengers including the van driver and pickup driver sustained non-life threatening injuries.
The injured Chinese tourists were taken to Doi Saket, Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai and Nakhon Ping hospitals.
The accident occurred on a curve section of the Chiang Mai-Chiang Rai Road in tambon Chiang Doi during a downpour.
Shortly after the incident, police said a 22-wheel trailer truck went off the road due to slippery conditions on the Chiang Mai-Lampang Road in Saraphi district. The truck’s trailer blocked the traffic and caused a traffic jam stretching several kilometres. Authorities were able to clear the truck from the road later in the night.
