BANGKOK – Thailand’s Justice Minister Gen. Phaitun Khumchaya and a U.S. charge d’affaires Patrick Murphy have met to discuss many issues including Thailand’s crack-down on human trafficking.

The Deputy Permanent Secretary for Justice Chanchai Chaiyanukit said the U.S. Charge d’Affaires Patrick Murphy and his entourage met on Wednesday with the Thai Justice Minister Gen. Phaitun Khumchaya and the ministry’s executives to discuss cooperation in various fields.

The Minister asked the U.S. to support Thailand’s operations to combat the narcotic drugs trade in Chiang Rai’s Golden Triangle.

He also reported the measures the country is taking against human trafficking to the U.S. envoy, saying the Thai government was taking the problem very seriously, the deputy permanent secretary said.

The minister told the U.S. envoy that Thailand was amending many laws to come into line with international standards in respect to human rights, Mr. Chanchai added.

The U.S. envoy accepted that Thailand was in a transition period and on the way to a general election, the deputy permanent secretary said. -NNT
