Nearly 500 accidents occurred at U-turns over the past year

BANGKOK – According to statistics from the World Health Organization and The University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute in the United States, Thailand is ranked second in terms of traffic fatalities with 44 deaths per a population of 100,000 per year.

According to the global statistics, the average number of people died in road accidents is 18 per a population of 100,000 per year.

Analysts at Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health said the high number of fatalities not only resulted from motorists’ carelessness alone. Accident-prone road conditions were also to blame for the tragedy. The Ministry of Public Health revealed that nearly 500 accidents occurred at U-turns over the past year.

However, Maitree Inthusut, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Interior, said that drunk driving was still the top cause of auto accidents during the holidays in Thailand.

Danger-prone road conditions and recklessness of motorists have made Thailand become one of the three countries with the highest numbers of traffic fatalities in the world.

Coming first on the list was Namibia 45 and Iran with 38 fatalities per a population of 100,000 respectively.
The Metropolitan Police Department in Bangkok has stated that one of the main objectives of 2015 is to prevent accidents that happen in the major roads, through the detection of speeding motorists along with enforcing the law with more strictness in order to create a law abiding conscious in the public.
According to Pol. Maj. Gen Adul Narongsak, the Deputy Chief of Metropolitan Police Bureau, the police will concentrate the main roads that are more prone to accidents as the first priority.
