CHIANG MAI – The Chiang Rai International School participated in its first ever Model United Nations conference in Chiang Mai on Friday, November 14th. They were the largest delegation among eight schools from the north of Thailand.
John Watson a teacher at Chiang Rai International School said “we are very proud of our students, who represented our diverse student body”.
Student delegates hail from Thailand, Myanmar, South Korea, the Philippines, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, China, Malaysia, the USA, and the Akha Nation.
The topics debated in the conference ranged from the South China Sea dispute, protection of human rights for refugees, the trafficking of endangered animals, and drug abuse prevention, to controlling the spread of infectious diseases and pandemics.
CRIS students prepared for three months to attend the conference, which is a simulation of various UN bodies such as the Security Council, World Health Organization and United Nations Environment Program.
Mr. Russell Henley, Vice-Consul of the United States, was the keynote speaker.
