CHIANG RAI – Police and the Pha Muang military task force in Chiang Rai have apprehended six men of a suspected drug gang with more than 200,000 speed pills, a kilogram of Ecstasy and nearly one million baht in cash were seized in two separate operations in Chiang Rai on Friday.

A team of police, Pha Muang military task force and local defense volunteers searched five target locations in the Mae Sai district along the Thai-Myanmar border on Friday morning. The raid followed information that traffickers would smuggle drugs into the country via border areas.

After the search found nothing illegal, the team then expanded the search to other areas and finally found a black bag left near a rubber plantation behind a village. The bag contained 168,000 methamphetamine pills and about a kilogram of the drug Ecstasy.

Later in the day during the second search in Mae Chan district, the Pha Muang military task force and local police arrested five young men with 40,000 speed pills.

The five suspects were identified as Leetor Ouayyue, 26, Archa Ouayyue, 22, Arlor Sormue, 27, an 18-year-old teenager, and another youth.

During the interrogation, the suspects offered a one-million-baht bribe in exchange for their release, authorities said.

Police said they pretended to accept the offer. The arrested men then contacted Natthaporn Aleeku, 30, to bring the money to the investigators. Mr Natthaporn was then seized after handing 990,000 baht to the officers.
