CHIANG RAI – Boarder Patrol Officers in the Mae Jan district of Chiang Rai Province have arrested a Royal Thai Police Sub Lieutenant and two other men in connection with counterfeit bank notes valued at Bt 194,000.
Chiang Rai Police Officials said Officers in the Mae Jan district had been tipped off that the counterfeit Thai currency would be transferred from central Thailand to the Myanmar – Mae Sai border area.
Royal Thai Police Sub-Lieutenant Wichian Malidong, from Suphan Buri Province, Jetsada Nudam, from Chon Buri Province, Bamrung Pakpian, from Kanchanaburi Province.
When authorities approached the vehicle the suspects were driving, Police Sub-Lieutenant Wichian he told them he was a Police Sub-Lieutenant and asked to be allowed through the checkpoint.
The police at the Mae Jan check point disregarded his request and insisted on examining their vehicle, uncovering counterfeit bank notes totaling 194,000 Baht.
Police Officials said the suspects refused to give any information with regards to the origin of the counterfeit bank notes.
Chiang Rai Police also subjected the three men to urine tests and found evidence of drug use. Officials now believe the men were selling the counterfeit banknotes in exchange for drugs.
