CHIANG RAI – Mae Fah Luang University has offered free tickets to members of the Chiang Rai Expat Club to a classical guitar concert by Hucky Eichelmann. Eichelmann is from Germany and a long-time resident of Thailand. He has a diverse musical repertoire that brings together Western and Eastern cultures and integrates classical music with folk and popular music.
The concert is entitled “The Music of ASEAN.” It is free but picking up tickets beforehand will ensure a good seat. The concert takes place on 20 Nov. at 19:00 (7 pm) at the C4 building (auditorium) at Mae Fah Luang University. If you would like to attend, please reply to this note let me know how many tickets you want. I will order the tickets. You can pick them up at the Nov. 8 meeting or, if you’re not planning to attend that meeting, you can pick them up from me at a time arranged (089-207-7806).
This offer resulted from a meeting of the CREC executive and the university to arrange speakers from the University. They are very interested in developing a relationship with our club, including the possibly of having our members share their expertise with short presentations to their faculty and students. We are hoping for additional opportunities in the coming year.
CHRISTMAS PLAY
Club member Patricia Solar is working on bringing us a Christmas play, “The Christmas Choir”, which may become a Christmas dinner/play. That event, to be performed by The Gate Theatre of Chiang Mai, is scheduled for Dec 23. Patricia has developed a program to sign up sponsors and raise funds and has already signed up some sponsors for the show. Now she would like some help in carrying out the program. If you can help, please contact Patricia at vannesolar@gmail.com. This will be CREC’s Christmas event. Please help make it a success.
SURVEY/QUESTIONNAIRE
A survey about the areas of interest for speakers and activities you would like the club to pursue will be circulated to you shortly. It will be a big help for planning purposes, so please take the time to fill it out. We hope to offer one event per month besides the regular meeting’s speaker.
NOVEMBER’S MEETING
The next speaker, scheduled for November 8, is Kim Roberts, who will be talking about expats and mental health. I’ll send more details closer to November 8.
DINING CLUB
Another activity being developed is a “Dining Club”. This will involve a “tasting event” at a different restaurant every month as well as a short presentation from the host about whatever makes the restaurant proud – food preparation, food sourcing, kitchen tour, etc. Then a sample will be served of all the menu items that make the restaurant unique or noteworthy. There will be a set prepaid charge based on the restaurant’s normal pricing, the range of food items offered and the number of attendees. The first event is scheduled for the end of November. You will receive an email this week with more details.
OCTOBER’S MEETING
Thanks to Peter Brierley for the great talk he gave October 11 on building a house in Thailand. Attendance was high. Questions were stimulating and post-meeting comments were positive. Thanks also to club member John Ellis who provides the monthly meeting space for CREC for free. John’s new bistro was functioning for the event and service and coffee were great.
