Chiang Rai Tours Opperators Say Martial Law Not Effecting Tourism

Mr Boontham Thipprasong (Left), president of Chiang Rai Chamber of Commerce, said martial law had impacts on tourism during the initial period but the impacts have eased.

CHIANG RAI – Tourism operators in Northern Thailand believe that the martial law will not affect tourism industry in the upcoming high tourism season.

The president of the northern tourism federation said today that, despite the existence of the martial law imposed since May 22, tourism business in the North continues to expand because the tourism operators have confidence in the economy and the good prospect of economic expansion when Asean will become an economic community next year.

Meanwhile, Mr Boontham Thipprasong, president of Chiang Rai Chamber of Commerce, said martial law had impacts on tourism during the initial period but the impacts have eased as local people as well as tourist have a better understanding of the situation.

He said that tourism business was recovering and more tourists from China have visited Chiang Rai.  Nevertheless, he hopes that martial law will be lifted in the future so that tourism business can pick up quickly.
