CHIANG RAI –  A patrol from a Army Joint Task Force intercepted two drug smugglers wading across the Mae Sai river and seized 200,000 methamphetamine pills(Yaba) and 13kg of crystal methamphetamine on the Thailand-Myanmar border in Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district last night.

According to a report to Maj Gen Bancherd Changpoonthong, the Pha Muang Force commander, a patrol from the 2nd Cavalry Task Force about 8pm spotted two men wading across the Mae Sai River from Myanmar to a boat landing at Ban Wiang Hom on the Thai side of the border. One of them was carrying a large black bag on his shoulder.

When the soldiers called on the two men to stop for a search they fled back across the river, leaving behind the black bag.

Found in the big bag were 20 packages containing 200,000 methamphetamine pills and a smaller bag with 13kg of crystal methamphetamine, also known as “ice”.

The drugs were believed to have been produced by a Red Wa or Muser ethnic group in an area opposite Chiang Rai’s Mae Fa Luang district
